Electrolysis hair removal is the most reliable option available today to permanently remove transgender facial, body and genital hair. Laser hair removal can be an acceptable or even a preferable alternative in some cases, but laser only is usually not sufficient to remove all facial hair permanently.
Pros: Electrolysis is the only FDA approved method of permanent hair removal. It can successfully remove all types of hair, regardless of skin color, hair textures or colors, or stage of hair growth. It can be performed on all areas of the body, except the inside of the nose and inside of the ear. After each treatment, any hair that regrows will be finer and lighter.
Cons: Electrolysis is time consuming and requires commitment. Common side effects of electrolysis include temporary redness, bumps, swelling and scabbing.
Follow your electrologist’s after-care instructions. This will include information about cleansing your skin, using soothing products, what to avoid and terminating temporary hair removal methods, such as waxing, tweezing, etc.
Laser hair removal offers long-term hair reduction, as opposed to the permanent hair removal offered by electrolysis. It can be used on all parts of the body, except the eyebrow. It is most effective on light, medium or olive skin with dark hair. It is generally ineffective on blonde, white or gray hair. Dark brown and black skin has a higher risk of burns, scars and hyperpigmentation.
Pros: Laser hair removal is faster than electrolysis as it targets a larger area of skin rather than individual hair follicles. Laser is considered permanent hair reduction that is long-lasting, and may produce permanent results. After treatment, any hair that regrows will be finer and lighter. Laser can be a more affordable option as it is less time consuming.
Cons: Laser hair removal is not considered permanent. Many clients are not good candidates for laser hair removal, based on hair and skin color, health conditions and medication use.
Follow your laser techs after-care instructions. This will include information about cleansing your skin, using soothing products, what to avoid and terminating temporary hair removal methods, such as waxing, tweezing, etc.
Everyone's hair removal journey is different and there are many factors to consider, such as the area you are treating, time, cost, skin and hair color and hair type.
Some clients, if they are a candidate, like to start their hair removal journey with permanent laser reduction, as it targets a larger surface area in a shorter period of time. Then once the hairs are reduced; they will target the remaining hairs the laser could not treat with electrolysis. Other clients like to start and finish their hair removal journey with electrolysis only as it is the only FDA approved permanent hair removal method.
The treat and move on method involves treating a small area and gradually moving onto a new area once the previous area clears up.
For electrolysis clients; this method tends to be the preferred method. The number of treatment hours and the total cost to complete full facial hair removal are still the same just spread out over a longer period of time.
For electrolysis clients who are looking for a more up front budget friendly option or for clients who find electrolysis sensitive and are unable to attend long sessions may prefer to consider this plan.
For laser clients; this method tends to be the less preferred method. The number of treatments will remain the same, however, the cost will usually be more in the long run as full face laser hair removal is usually less money than treating the individual areas.
The full force method involves treating your entire targeted area up front.
For electrolysis clients; this method tends to be the less preferred method. It requires more initial treatment time and cost to complete the initial clearing of your entire facial hair over a span of several weeks, this includes long appointment times, close together. After the initial clearing, you will need weekly maintenance electrolysis until all of your hair is gone.
Electrolysis clients who have the upfront budget and are able to attend long sessions may prefer this method.
For laser clients; this method tends to be the preferred method. Laser clients are able to target their entire face in a shorter period of time. Full face laser tends to be less money than treating individual areas.
Starting this journey can often feel overwhelming. At True Beauty we offer complimentary consultations where we can discuss your hair removal needs and concerns. We offer both electrolysis and laser so together we can create a treatment plan to suit your needs, whether it be for your skin rejuvenation or hair removal from the face, body or in preparation for gender confirming surgery (GCS) .
Unwanted hair, whether on the face or body can be embarrassing and until completely removed the continual appearance of unwanted hair can cause gender dysphoria. Having those hairs eliminated is an important milestone in one's transitioning journey, it truly can be life changing.
Hormone treatment will slightly slow and soften hair growth, but it will never fully stop it. Facial and body hair removal is a satisfying, worthwhile process, however, full hair removal on either the face or body is a large project that requires patience and commitment to achieve the desired results.
Although every journey will be unique, trans women usually see the face as a primary focus. Freeing the skin from stubble and a five o’clock shadow is much more than a cosmetic goal.
Body hair removal can include, hands, feet, chest, abdomen, back, arms, legs and genital. Depending on your hair growth patterns unwanted body hair removal can be a significant task for trans women.
Pre-operative hair removal should be planned well in advance to surgery. Starting the hair removal process early ensures there is enough time permanently remove all the hairs from the area needed.
If you plan to have genital electrolysis, please consult your surgeon for your hair removal requirements.
There are three primary types of skin flaps the surgeon is able to use to create the penis. These options are the arm, thigh and side.
You will need to complete hair removal prior to surgery to avoid hair related complications, such as hair growth in the canal formed for the urethra, which can lead to further complications.
This surgery utilizes the penile skin to line the vagina, and the scrotal skin to create the labia.
You will need to complete hair removal on the entire penile shaft including 1" around the base, the entire scrotum and a 2-2.5" wide strip along the perineum ending 1" above the anus. Hair is removed from this area to avoid hair growth within the vagina cavity.
